In English:
Always take a step starting with a left leg lead (#1) and close feet together with a right foot step (#). Then perform the move on #3-4. There are eight moves.

1) Extend arms through previous person’s arms + bend your knees.

2) Make “holes” with your arms close to your armpits and bend = hyper extend your back

3) Turn 180 degrees clockwise and make a Japanese bow (turn only halfway = 90 degrees back)

4) Take your step (left leg) only halfway back, as indicated above. Turn all the way to look where you came from and be on the look-out.

5) Make one swimming movement

6) Pick a pebble from the ground and come back up

7) pump some air into your tires (twice)

When you reach the end, start over from (left, right step) the first movement. To end the dance, the first dancer will start rolling his/her arms like a cat swimming.

When starting to dance, the first person in the line starts doing the movements from number 1 at beat 1. When he or she completed the first 4 beats, the second person starts from move no. 1 sticking his or her arms through the “holes” the first in line is making at the same time. (And when bowing the person behind you is simultaneously leaning back to make “holes” – and to make room for your bow.) If you are, say, person no. 4, you will only take the steps (leftm right) but execute no movements untill the person in front of has started and also completed the 3 first moves. When you start on the 4th phrase, you start from the top, as everybody does, in his/her turn. The dance proceeds like a conveyor belt.

Letkajenkka / Letkis is both a genre of music but it is also a popular party or novelty dance.

Letkajenkka or Letkis as a dance (not the music) is a variation of the Bunny Hop, that became popular and was introduced in the show Bandstand. Both Bunny Hop and Letkajenkka or Letkis are forms of the conga line dance and are thus festival marches. Both dances are danced in a long line by repeating a simple set of hops while placing hands on the shoulders or hips of the person in front.

The Bunny Hop is usually done to a recording of the song Bunny Hop by Ray Anthony’s Orchestra recorded in 1952. (”New Pop Records”, Time Magazine, January 26, 1953)

The Bunny Hop was danced to other songs, too, and it is still a popular children’s activity.

It has been suspected that exchange students returning to Finland imported the Bunny Hop steps from the United States where they might have danced it or seen it on the show Bandstand. Later in 1963 they were modified to Letkajenkka, the Finnish version of the Bunny Hop. The genre of the original Bunny Hop song could be described as slowish Boogie Woogie, but the Finnish variant is danced to Jenka (jenkka) music.

Jenka, or jenkka in Finnish, is usually a piece of music in time signature 4/4. It is categorized as either traditional Finnish music or folk music. In the sixties there arose an idea to perform old or traditional music in a new way, or compose Jenka songs that better suited the popular taste, that is, incorporate electric or big band instruments instead of the traditional violin and accordeon.

The idea was first realized by Erik Lindström who composed Letkajenkka in August, 1963. It hit the charts in October of the same year, and it was then performed by a Swedish band, the Adventures.

About six months later Rauno Lehtinen composed by far the most popular letkajenkka song, the Letkis. It it became a hit in many European countries, in Latin America, and even Japan.

In 1965, four instrumental versions of the tune reached number one in the Netherlands simultaneously. These were by Stig Rauno, Gudrun Jankis, an unknown group called The Wild Ones, and the Dutch Swing College Band. All four versions had the international title, Letkiss rather than the original Finnish title. It remained the only Dutch number one to have originated from Finland until 2000, when Freestyler by the Bomfunk MC’s reached number one.

Luxembourg won the Eurovision song contest of 1965 with Gainsbourg’s Poupée de cire, poupée de son (sung by France Gall). It was re-recorded in Finnish by Ritva Palukka. Here is a version of the song by Katri Helena. There is a jenka variation choreography on the music video. This letkajenkka became popular in German, Italian, and again, Japanese.

スズキ Suzuki on päätetty kirjoittaa seksikkäillä katakanoilla, mutta kaivelemalla Suzukin historiaa selviää, että nimi tulee tietenkin alkuperäisen yhtiön perustajan, Michio Suzukin sukunimestä. Katakanoilla ja latinalaisilla aakkosilla kirjoitettuna kanjien merkitys häipyy, mutta japanilaisille Suzuki-sukunimi on niin tuttu, että kaikki tietävät, mikä sen merkitys on.

鈴木 (suzu – ki); 鈴 suzu kello, esimerkiksi pronssinen kello, voisi kääntyä myös heleäksi ääneksi); ki puu. Näin ollen Suzuki voisi kääntyä “soiva puu” vaikka sanatarkka käännös onkin kellopuu.

Isuzu-nimi onkin sitten hankalampi tapaus. Ensinnäkin nimen kirjoitusasu on outo: se ei ole いすず vaan いすゞ, joka liittyy kalligrafiseen tyylittelyyn. Varsinainen nimi Isuzu (jonka z siis ääntyy soinnillisena s-äänteenä, ei kovana ts-ääneenä) periytyy mutkien kautta Isen temppelin alueella virtaavasta 五十鈴川 [いすずかわ] Isuzugawa-joesta.

Jos tarkastelee sekä Suzukin että Isuzun suzu-kanjia, huomaa pian yhtäläisyyden. Kellohan se taas nimissä kilahtaa. 五 (go) viisi; 十 (jyu) kymmenen – 五十 yhteensä siis viisikymmentä; 鈴 suzu) kello; 川 (kawa, gawa) joki.

Isuzun kirjoittamiseen katakanalla saattaa myös liittyä se, että Isuzu oli myös 5500 tonninen sota-alus, joka partioi Japaninmerellä. Myös se on saanut nimensä saman joen mukaan.

Kenkiinはフインランド語で「靴の中に」。Kimil on Corollaはフインランド語で「キミ（男の名前）はトヨタCorollaがある」。

I would have liked to find more of viili, acidofilus / lactobacillus products, piimä, xylitol – just to name a few. No Eliel Saarinen, not much Alvar Aalto. But true, this was only Google. I found some funny ones, though.

Pikku Finland day21.6 was a surprise. First of all the place for the festival is Kanazawa, the city where I happened to live. The caption is about sausage being served, Iittala and Artek…

I also found a calling card I received in Japan: Café Kiitos (Thank you in Finnish).

本田  Honda (hon – da); 本 = (hon, bon, pon, ppon) juuri, alkuperä, alku 田 = (ta, da) pelto mutta yhtenä sanana Riisipelto…

三菱  Mitsubishi 三= (mittsu) kolme; 菱 = (hishi, bishi) tähti tai suunnikas (rhombus) – siksi logossa on kolme suunnikasta tähden muodossa.

日産  Nissan Motors (ni- ssan) aloitti Tokion pörssissä lyhentyneenä alkuperäisestä muodostaan (Nippon Sangyou 日本産業).  日本 = (ni-hon);  Japani ; 産業 = (san-gyou tai suomeksi ehkä san-gjoo); teollisuus eli Japanin teollisuus

三洋  Sanyo tai sanyou 三 = san; kolme 洋 = you (tai nada, hiroshi, hiro, yo, yoshi jne.. );  meri, länsimainen – kolme merta, siis.

コマツ Komatsu maansiirtokoneet ovat suomalaisillekin tuttuja, mutta Japanissa Komatsu on kuin meillä Nokia tai Iittala,  Karhula tai outokumpu – yhtiö tai merkki, joka on saanut nimekseen paikkakunnan nimen.  Komatsu sijaitsee melko lähellä Kanazawaa, kaupunkia, jossa asuin. Paikka kirjoitetaan 小松 (ko-matsu) ja se tarkoitta pientä mäntyä.

昴 Subaru eli Pleijadit eli Seulasten tähtikuvio.

川崎 Kawasaki 川 = (kawa, gawa) joki, 崎 = (saki) pieni niemi eli Jokiniemi

ヤマハ Yamaha tulee perustaja Torakusu Yamahan nimestä 山葉, yama-ha; 山 = vuori; 葉 = lehti
日立 Hitachi tulee kanjeista 日 = (hi) aurinko; 立 = (tatsu, tachi) pystyttää

Joidenkin japanilaisten yhtiöiden tai merkkien nimet ovat vaikeampiselkoisia, kuten Toyotan. Perustajan nimi on ollut Toyoda, mutta nimi on myöhemmin muutettu Toyotaksi, jotta se olisi helpompi ääntää – kaupan päälle tuli piirtojen määrän väheneminen kahdeksaan, joka on Japanissa onnen luku.

Muutoin saitti on kyllä ihan viihdyttävä, siis niin kauan kuin voi nauraa muiden virheille.    Omat eivät niin naurattaneetkaan. Kuka tekee noin huonoa jälkeä!!?? Eipä ole varaa enää hihitellä engrishille…

Näyttely esitteli Hokusain (1760-1849) ja Hiroshigen (1797-1858), kahden Edo-kauden tunnetuimman maisemantekijän moniväripuupiirroksia 1830-luvulta 1850-luvulle (n. 200 kpl).  Näyttelyn tunnetuin työ oli Hokusain Suuri aalto (n. 1831), josta on tullut yksi Japanin taiteen tunnuskuvista. Blogissani onkin kuvia sen jäljennöksen painovaiheista museossa Japanin Kanazawassa, jossa alkuperäistä grafiikkalehteä (yhtä niistä) kävin viimeksi ihailemassa. Kyseessä oli jo kolmas kerta, kun kävin alkuperäisversiota katsomassa – ensimmäinen oli Retretissä 20 vuotta sitten!

Olen itse nähnyt mm. Hokusain Suuren aallon yhden vedoksen Retretissä lähes 20 vuotta sitten, ja uudestaan muutama vuosi sitten Japanissa . Kanazawan taidemuseossa oli näytillä samat Katsushika Hokusai, Hiroshige ja Utamaro. Kaikki ovat Edo-aikakauden (江戸時代 Edo jidai, 1600–1867) “kelluvan maailman” (浮世　ukiyo) kuvaajia, jonka aiheita olivat aluksi Edon, nykyisen Tokion kurtisaanit eli “kauniit ihmiset” (美人 bijin), kabuki-näyttelijät, sumopainijat, teetalojen ihmiset sekä “city-ihmiset” ja taiteenlajin saadessa lisää arvostusta, maisemat ja jokapäiväiset aiheet.

Tutustuin ystäväni Madokan kanssa kuuluisan Suuren aallon (Katsushika Hokusai) uusinnan valmistamiseen. Puupiirrokseen tarvitaan puuhun kaiverretut laatat, yksi laatta jokaista väriä kohden. Laattoihin hangataan väriä erityisellä ohuesta “bambunnahasta” taiteiljan itsensä valmistamalla sienellä. Sitten laatat kohdistetaan tarkasti samaan kohtaan paperia, ja painetaan. Koska kyseessä on painotyö, kuvia voidaan valmistaa sarjatyönä ja siis monta kappaletta samoilla puulaatoilla. Taitelija valmistaa välineensä itse, ja suuret taiteilijat ovat kaivertaneet alunperin laattansakin itse alkuperäisten maalaustensa ja piirrostensa pohjalta.

北斎葛飾　Katsushika Hokusaista on elokuvakin, joka näytettiin Suomen televisiossa joskus 1980-luvulla. Sen mukaan hän aloitti taivaanrannanmaalarina, asusti getantekijän yläkerrassa, teki itsekin hengenpitimisksi  puukenkiä, oppi näin puutyöt, piirteli alastomia naisia tai suoranaista epäsiveellistä materiaalia jkäyden samalla kuuluisien taiteilijoiden opissa, kunnes maalasi kuuluisat 36 näkymää Fujille, joka toi hänelle kypsällä iällä mainetta taiteilijana. Monet Hokusain puupiirroksista on pannassa Japanissa, sillä ne luetaan epäsiveellisiksi. Hänen maisemakuvansa ovat kuitenkin sangen suosittuja siellä, kuten monien muidenkin siistejä kuvia kaivertaneiden teokset, näiden joukossa Utamaro ja Hiroshige (jonka Shin-Ohashi -sillan luumupuutarhan jäljennös minulla on olohuoneessa – oikealla).

Monet ovat huomaavinaan yhtäläisyyksiä nyky-mangan ja puupiirrosten välillä. Muun muassa “kuvaa kuvassa” pidetään usein riittävänä syy-yhteytenä, mutta totuus lienee se, että manga on kyllä kopioitu länsimaalaisista sarjakuvista. On tietysti totta, että piirroskuvat olivat jo saaneet hyvin jalansijaa Japanissa kun manga ilmaantui markkinoille, mutta missäpä ei – valokuvaus keksittiin vasta 1800-luvulla. Japanissa tosin tuotettiin huimia määriä taidokkaita piirroksia painotyönä, myös tarkasti tehtyjä värillisiä, häivytyksineen, kaiverrettuine kanji-teksteineen. Kanjeja, kiinalaisia merkkejä ei siis ladottu, vaan kaiverrettiin puuhun kuvan kanssa.

Nimi ukiyo-e tulee sanoista “kelluva”, “maailma” ja “kuva”. Kelluvaksi maailmaksi sanottiin näyttelijöiden, kurtisaanien, gishojen, teetalojen ja punaisten lyhtyjen kortteleiden elämää. Samantapainen nimi on vielä nykyäänkin geishojen elämänpiirillä, joka on japaniksi 花柳界　karyuukai eli kukka- ja pajumaailma tai kukkien ja pajujen maailma (flower and willow world).

A short person, all I could see for 20 minutes, was grass. Halfway, there was a platform from where I could see the beautiful city skyline in the evening sun. After a while we heard a voice coming from the grass, reciting old thruths about social dancing in the olden days. The player was hidden so it was a surprise – an “experience”, as the organizers called it.

When arriving at the site we were greeted by Mustalaisprimas plays blonde, a blond violinist playing outside the century-old red villa originally a social club for a sobriety society. No alcohol was to be sold, but we were well prepared. There were some other performances, as well. A band called The Barn Sparrows (Musiikkia syvästä/-ltä etelästä) entertained us with music from the deep south or from deep … and as last year, also Granny (Mummo) had a word or two to tell us.

“Jyrki Katainen”, both a female and a male version greeted everybody and reminded us to make a deposit – to buy badges and neckties to support the band.

The show inside started with Mr. Playback Boy, the only Drag King I’ve ever seen. I’m soo in love with him (her). Mr. Playback Boy is Laura , a “theater and music professional” as she calls herself.

(S)he was the slimiest latino ever, the playboy evergreen singer, the obscene pop star, a frustrated base vocalist in an acappella group, a pompous male choir member, and finally, a director of orchestra.

After a short while of dance instruction, the band started to play, and people floodedon the dance floor. Vallilan Tango is this strange but excellent band featuring among other things, a vocalist who sings in broken English or broken Finnish as I think he is Dutch. And, they excel in Finnish tango, although they play cha cha, waltz, fox, and even polka, too.

As the villa is old and has no heating, it was chilly when I first arrived. I had to change clothes halfway in the night, as I was soaking wet, and it wasn’t the slight rainfall we got that night.. The Youngest R had found me a pussikalja somebody forgot in the bus, so I drank my present – I was so thirsty I didn’t care what it was.
