Year 2000 TWO Finnish hits also made the charts abroad: Bomfunk MC’s with Freestyler, and Darude with Sandstorm. There was a huge gap since the previous world hit back in 1963. That is when Letkis by Rauno Lehtinen became the latest craze in Europe, Latin America, and even Japan.
Letkajenkka / Letkis is both a genre of music but it is also a popular party or novelty dance.
Letkajenkka or Letkis as a dance (not the music) is a variation of the Bunny Hop, that became popular and was introduced in the show Bandstand. Both Bunny Hop and Letkajenkka or Letkis are forms of the conga line dance and are thus festival marches. Both dances are danced in a long line by repeating a simple set of hops while placing hands on the shoulders or hips of the person in front.

The Bunny Hop was danced to other songs, too, and it is still a popular children’s activity.
It has been suspected that exchange students returning to Finland imported the Bunny Hop steps from the United States where they might have danced it or seen it on the show Bandstand. Later in 1963 they were modified to Letkajenkka, the Finnish version of the Bunny Hop. The genre of the original Bunny Hop song could be described as slowish Boogie Woogie, but the Finnish variant is danced to Jenka (jenkka) music.
Jenka, or jenkka in Finnish, is usually a piece of music in time signature 4/4. It is categorized as either traditional Finnish music or folk music. In the sixties there arose an idea to perform old or traditional music in a new way, or compose Jenka songs that better suited the popular taste, that is, incorporate electric or big band instruments instead of the traditional violin and accordeon.
The idea was first realized by Erik Lindström who composed Letkajenkka in August, 1963. It hit the charts in October of the same year, and it was then performed by a Swedish band, the Adventures.
About six months later Rauno Lehtinen composed by far the most popular letkajenkka song, the Letkis. It it became a hit in many European countries, in Latin America, and even Japan.
In 1965, four instrumental versions of the tune reached number one in the Netherlands simultaneously. These were by Stig Rauno, Gudrun Jankis, an unknown group called The Wild Ones, and the Dutch Swing College Band. All four versions had the international title, Letkiss rather than the original Finnish title. It remained the only Dutch number one to have originated from Finland until 2000, when Freestyler by the Bomfunk MC’s reached number one.

Luxembourg won the Eurovision song contest of 1965 with Gainsbourg’s Poupée de cire, poupée de son (sung by France Gall). It was re-recorded in Finnish by Ritva Palukka. The one and only, legendary Isle of Sheep event hosted by Vallilan Tango was a success, once again. August 29th the evening started around 4 PM, when people took off to the trail through the marsh. We were invited to have juice, cookies, and candy, then to follow the signs to Lammassaari along the path. |

A short person, all I could see for 20 minutes, was grass. Halfway, there was a platform from where I could see the beautiful city skyline in the evening sun. After a while we heard a voice coming from the grass, reciting old thruths about social dancing in the olden days. The player was hidden so it was a surprise – an “experience”, as the organizers called it.

When arriving at the site we were greeted by Mustalaisprimas plays blonde, a blond violinist playing outside the century-old red villa originally a social club for a sobriety society. No alcohol was to be sold, but we were well prepared. There were some other performances, as well. A band called The Barn Sparrows (Musiikkia syvästä/-ltä etelästä) entertained us with music from the deep south or from deep … and as last year, also Granny (Mummo) had a word or two to tell us.

“Jyrki Katainen”, both a female and a male version greeted everybody and reminded us to make a deposit – to buy badges and neckties to support the band.

The show inside started with Mr. Playback Boy, the only Drag King I’ve ever seen. I’m soo in love with him (her). Mr. Playback Boy is Laura , a “theater and music professional” as she calls herself.

(S)he was the slimiest latino ever, the playboy evergreen singer, the obscene pop star, a frustrated base vocalist in an acappella group, a pompous male choir member, and finally, a director of orchestra.

After a short while of dance instruction, the band started to play, and people floodedon the dance floor. Vallilan Tango is this strange but excellent band featuring among other things, a vocalist who sings in broken English or broken Finnish as I think he is Dutch. And, they excel in Finnish tango, although they play cha cha, waltz, fox, and even polka, too.
As the villa is old and has no heating, it was chilly when I first arrived. I had to change clothes halfway in the night, as I was soaking wet, and it wasn’t the slight rainfall we got that night.. The Youngest R had found me a pussikalja somebody forgot in the bus, so I drank my present – I was so thirsty I didn’t care what it was.

First the modern stuff:
The famous Internet meme Cebu prisoners doing remakes of choreographed dances such as Michael Jackson’s Thriller (<a href=”http://youtube.com/watch?v=hMnk7lh9M3o)
Algorithm March proves that anybody can learn to dance. The inmates of this Filipino prison in Cebu may or may not be voluntary dancers, but they certailny learned the routines. I wish I knew how many hours they have honed each routine. The numerous remakes can be found in e.g. Youtube by looking for related videos of the clip above. (Then for the trad stuff: There are also two clips that portray the inmates doing religious dances, one for the Christian and the other for the Muslim, that make up 5% of the Filipino population)
The Cebu inmates seem to be well-known in the Philippines, as I was introduced to various Filipino artists. Must admit that for example singer, child prodigy Charise is very good.
More even more traditional stuff:
A long time a go I saw Filipino folk dancing at Helsinki Savoy Theater. I had forgotten all about it ’till I saw this clip of this interesting sporting of the Philippines. Tinikling is a traditional – and somewhat dangerous dance, especially if a dancer or an assistant makes a mistake.

Luulin olleeni maailman viimeinen hassun anime-tytön purjonpyöritysflasyn nähnyt ja suomalaisen kansansävelmäsämpläyksen kuullut suomalainen. Osoittautui, että minun pitää Japania kaukaisesti tangentoivaa maailmanlaajuista netti-ilmiötä levittää omassa Japani-bligissani.
Tässäpä tämä aluksi (voit hyvin lopettaa katsomisen hetken päästä, ja jatkaa tämän lukemista toisessa ikkunassa, sillä kuva ei muuksi muutu, eikä juuri musiikkikaan).

Silloiselta nimeltään Turunen on ehkä äNNäs “meidänluokkalainen”, joka on ruvennut kuuluisaksi. Hanni on erittäin lahjakas, joten olen todellan iloinen hänen menestyksestään. A woman of foreign descent didn’t get accepted to dance class in Pori – What is this!!!??? The original piece of news in Helsingin Sanomat.
I’d like to say this is unheard of in Finland, but as shooting dramas, evil things do happen. I realize that this is not a tried case, but it is not nameless or faceless. I will, for now, assume this really happened.
This incident, in my mind, is disturbing in at least two ways. I wouldn’t like to see discrimination in any form in Finland, as our laws and also the undertone of the communal awareness is against it. Also, it makes me sad that dancers, partner dancers, of all people, have chosen to act this way. Of course, there is no hard evidence, only word against word or actually only a statement at this point, but I hope no-one seeks publicity like that without fair grounds. Originally, the incident was published in HS as a letter to the editor sent in by Anastassia Joukovskaja, the alledgedly discriminated against woman. If this proves to be true I hope it is the last one of the kind, at least of the sort where dancers are at fault. Partner dancing is a nonverbal form of communication, and we, of all people, should see the power of body language, the possibilities of communicating without a spoken or written language – and, in this case, Joukovskaja even speaks Finnish, so only her background was discriminated against. The answer she got, she reports, was that the course was intended for “natural Finnish people.” What’s more, the dance club representative had even had the nerve to tell Joukovskaja that the reason for accepting only natural born Finns was that it was in the club rules. What crap! HS, by the way, chacked the rules: Surprise, surprise – no mention of ethincity whatsoever. Luckily there is a minorities ombudsman to turn to, and Rainer Hiltunen, an officer of the ombudsman office, reports that the minorities ombudsman will take the case under investigation if Joukovskaja wants to contact them and file a report.
Luckily the standard of the discussion around the subject on HS site is slightly higher than similar discussions on sites like suomi24 and the like. Most users have not accepted this kind of behavior, and only a handful of “preservers of Finnish culture” have joined in. The best arguments include one posting where the writer asks whether it would be the best way to preserve and promote Finnish (dance) culture by teaching it to those of foreign descent and other newcomers, and not refusing Finnish culture of them. Also, luckily a qick-thinking dance school representative in Pori (the town on the Finnish west coast where this happened) welcomed all and everybody regardless of background to join their classes. And how about the writing asking the ones rigorously promoting all-Finnishness whether they also believed in following the oh-so-Finnish penal code, the law of Finland… Good, good. Well, we’ll stay on the case.

Osis, kaudenavajaiset 2007, disko. Seison kahden tanssikerholaisen miehen kanssa lattian sivussa, ja osislainen mies, jolla on sanojensa mukaan tyttöystävä, tulee ja todella lujaa ja isosti kouraisee minua takapuolesta. Tanssikerholaiset miehet katsovat hämmästyneinä päältä, ja huomaan, että he ovat valmiita tarvittaessa toimiin puolestani. Ihana huomata, miten he valpastuivat heti, äimistyivät ja jopa paheksuivat aivan siinä missä minäkin, sekä juttelivat asiasta kanssani ystävällisessä ja kannustavassa hengessä. Totesin, että näköjään, jos minä en ole mitään, niin eivät edes he ole mitään, sillä heidän “riviirilleenhän” klähmijää tuli. Seurustelin aivan selvästi heidän kanssaan, ja kuka sanoo, etten olisi voinut olla kumman tahansa tyttöystävä. Mutta siitä huolimatta minua näköjään voi kouria heidän silmiensä allakin. Tähän on pari vaihtoehtoista selviytymisstrategiaa: voi ärtyä ja hankkia loukkaantuneen vihamiehen pienessä yhteisössä, jonka jäsen pitää ja haluaa olla; voi olla kuin ei huomaisikaan; tai voi suorastaan mennä mukaan “huumorimielellä”. Huumori on tuosta kaukana, sillä minä voisin loukkaantua, miehet olisivat voineet loukkaantua ja jopa suuttua minulle oikean syyllisen sijasta.
Olen pari kertaa ollut osin samassa seurassa diskossa, jossa yleensä ennätysajassa joku liimautuu kylkeen, jos erehdyn liian kauaksi seurastani. Aluksi väitteeni siitä, että näin useimmiten käy, ei oikein uponnut, mutta myöhemmin arviot olivat: “Hei, sä sait taas heti ihailijan.” “Ja olisit nähnyt kun koko toi rivi kattoi sun tanssia.” ” En olisi uskonut, mutta näköjään pitää paikkansa. En vaan ole koskaan nähnyt ihan tossa mittakaavassa aiemmin.”
Mietin, että yleinen näkemys tuntuu olevan se, että minulla ei voi olla valittamista, tai että minun kadehtimiseni on loogista ja perusteltua. Olen eri mieltä. Siinä, että seurassani olevien miesten, olivat varattuja tai eivät, joutuvat jatkuvasti pitämään huolta minusta ja toimimaan portsareina, järjestysmiehinä ja body guardeina ei ole mitään hauskaa, ei varmastikaan miesten itsensäkään mielestä. Olen vaikeaa seuraa baarissa, kun aina saa olla valppaana hätistelemään kutsumattolmia vieraita kauemmaksi.
Eilen loppuillasta tuli vielä narikassa joku kutittelemaan käsivarresta, joka suuresti jo nauratti minua. Lähestymistapa oli uusi. Siitä saakka kun tämä alkoi, eli joskus vähän päälle kymmenvuotiaasta, olen tärmännyt mielestäni kaikkiin mahdollisiin ja mahdottomiin versioihin klähminnästä. Mutta tämä oli jo hulvatonta: “Kuti kuti”, rapsuttaa aivan tuiterissa oleva hyväntuulinen nuorimies käsivarttani, vaikka juttelen ryhmämme kanssa. Pojat valpastuivat heti, mutta heitäkin rupesi naurattamaan, kun minua hihitytti. Absurdi tapa, mutta pojat totesivat, että ilmeisen toimiva, sillä se sai minut nauramaan eikä ärtymään.
Uuh, ääh, osa kaksi
Kalle, siis helsinkiläinen disko Kaarle XII. Olen oppilaiden kanssa tanssimassa, kun erään tanssioppilaan tuttu lähestyy. Minua varoitetaan etukäteen siitä, että mies on täynnä itseään. Mies hoippuu paikalle ja katselee minua kiinnostuneena ja kysyy: “Kukas tämä kaunotar on?” Oppilaani vastaa: “Tämä on tyttöystäväni”, ja halaa minut kainaloonsa. Yritän näyttää täysin lumoutuneelta hymyillessäni ja katsoessani miestä yläviistoon. Istahdan penkille, ja saan Tulokkaan viereeni. Istuutuessaan hän jo ojentaa kätensä ja kun hän pääsee penkille on hänen oikea kätensä jo sujahtanut selkäni takaa pakaralle. “Olet siis ystäväni tyttökaveri?” Vakuutteluni ei vakuuttanut, tai sitten Tulokas ei välitä tuttunsa tunteista. Vaikken reviiriajattelusta pidäkään, tässä kyllä mentiin ensinnäkin minun reviirirajojeni sisälle, ja koska Tulokkaan tapaiset miehet oletettavasti ovat erittäin kiinnostuneita “omista reviireistään” eli mm. “naisistaan”, kokeilimme yhteistuumin tyttöystävä-lähestymistapaa. Ei toiminut, ei. Luullakseni Tulokas kyllä saattoi uskoa minut oppilaani naisystäväksi, mutta ei se estänyt häntä jatkamasta: “Miten olisi ihana ja ylellinen illallinen jossain hyvässä ravintolassa, mä voisin tulla hakemaan sua.. eikä ton tarvitse koskaan tietää.” Huh, jos oletetaan oppilaani ajattelevan monogaamisesti. Ehkä tässä kulttuurissa se on kuitenkin turvallinen ajattelutapa, kunnes ehkä toisin todetaan. Jos todella olisin ollut oppilaani tyttöystävä, ja jos mies sattuisi olemaan mustasukkaista laatua tai sellainen, joka ei osaa ajatella, olisi perheriita ollut valmis. Syy olisi hyvin voitu laittaa minun niskoilleni ja väittää, että flirttailin. Tässä kokeilussa olin onneksi vain tuttu, enkä perhettä, minusta ei oltu mustasukkaisia eikä siis kukaan loukkaantunut, paitsi minä, jonka takapuoli kyllä sai illan annoksen hierontaa. No, minua ehdittiin onneksi varottaa Tulokkaan meitä lähestyessä, joten klähmintä ei tullut yllätyksenä. Tyttöystävä-kortti vedettiin kyllä aika yllättäen esiin, mutta mielestäni pelasin hyvin mukana. Kun tuo pokeri on niin muotia, pitäisikö tällä pokerinaamalla osallistua?

My friend mailed me one link, and I felt the urge to search for more… of old videos of songs we like to dance to. Some of these songs are so old that our younger dancer generations have not seen these groups or artists perform the first time around. Once ABBA become fashionable again, the second coming of bands such as Boney M, Dschinghis Khan, Duran Duran etc. has made me smile at the fact I listened to them back in the seventies and eighties. But although young generations recognize the music, they often have only a faint idea of what the band looked like, especially on video. There was no MTV… but now there is Youtube!

Kaksi tuntia sunnuntai-illasta Hartwall Arenalla. Deliriumin videotaide oli hienoa. Valot olivat kohdallaan. Vaikuttavuus katoaa televisioon varrattuna paikan päällä, mutta erikseen kannattaa ehkä nostaa esiin ilmatanssinumerot, joissa roikutaan joko yhdestä kädestä tai kainaloista liinoissa – joka ei enää ole uutta, mutta entä paritanssina? Vain toinen tai kummatkin tanssijat, tässä tapauksessa aina ryhmästä kaksi miestä tai lopulta nainen ja mies kiipeilivät ilmassa toistensa päällä, pyörivät sekä symmetrisissä ja epäsymmetrisissä asennoissa, roikkuivat käsistä, jaloista ja vaikka miten. Yllättävän tanssillista siitä oli saatu, ja jännitystä riitti sopivasti jos toisella ei ollut liinoja ollenkaan.
Toinen mainitsemisen arvoinen oli pimeässä hohtavia hulavanteita pyörittelevä matonainen. Täytyy myöntää, että ennen en ihan tuollaista motoriikkaa ole nähnyt. Suurimmat suosionosoitukset taisi saada neljän lähes alastoman muskelimiehen akrobatiashow, jossa yhdistyi erilaisiin staattisiin asentoihin perustuva koreografia ja hulppea akrobatia, jossa ei valmistella, varmistella, hengitetä syvään tai toivuta hypystä, vaan homma jatkuu saumattomasti asemien vaihtoon, täpäköihin loppuasentoihin, jotka eivät ole kovin konventionaailisia… mutta miten tätä nyt kuvata sanoilla.
Hartwall Areenan järjestysmiehelle ei tosin kerry minulta ruusuja, vaan painettuani hänen yksilöllisen numeronsa mieleeni taidan pirauttaa ylemmälle taholle. Kun kyseessä on kohtalaisen kallis, täysin emootioihin vetoava esitys, on olennaista, ettei mielialaa pilata heti ensimmäiseksi. Perättömät syytökset väärällä paikalla istumisesta, taskulampulla osoittelu silmiin kesken esityksen ja niin edelleen ei ole omiaan takaamaan täydellistä taidenautintoa. Kaikkihan on kuitenkin hyvin heti kuin väli-insiddentti on ohi, eikö vain? AMnesia iskee välittömästi, ja sitten voikin taas napsauttaa hyvän mielen päälle ja sammuttaa huonon, kuin taskulampun valon. Joo.
